Government Sadiq College Women’s University (GSCWU) is higher education, a public research institute established in 2013 at the initiative of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif in Bahawalpur, Punjab. The main purpose of building Sadiq College Women’s University Bahawalpur is to promote an educational environment for women education seekers in South Punjab. GSCWU is committed to providing high standards in teaching and research for progressive Pakistan to bring together civilized and conscientious women.
The university has well-educated and trained faculty in the fields of science, engineering, information technology, management science, and humanities. The undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses offered at the university are no less than any international program. Dedicated and qualified teachers are working in the university to provide the latest curriculum in every field. GSCWU runs 26 BS, MA, and MSc programs under five faculties. Student enrollment has increased from 4,500 in 2015 to about 6,000 in 2021.
The university is named after its founder General Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan. He was Nawab of Bahawalpur State from 1907 to 1966 and later Amir. Nawab Sadiq had a keen interest in education. During his tenure, he allowed free education up to A level and the state government provided scholarships on merit for higher education. In 1951, the Nawab donated 500 acres of land for the construction of Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur. Later, the Government Sadiq College Women’s University Bahawalpur Act was passed by the Punjab Assembly on December 27, 2012, and on January 3, 2013, by the Governor of Punjab. Prof. Dr. Talat Afza became the first Vice-Chancellor of GSCWU and took charge.
