The college was upgraded in 1994 and its status changed from a college to a university. The university has been ranked second in the category of Agriculture / Veterinary Universities by HEC. It has risen to 7th position in the overall ranking of Pakistani universities by HEC. During the 1970s, an agricultural college was established in Rawalpindi on the orders of the Punjab government with the aim of improving Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arad Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) is an agricultural college established by the Punjab government in the 1970s. The college became a university in 1994. The services that PMAS-AAUR provides to its local community include technology transfer, outreach farm services, visits from the farming community to their problems and solutions, demonstrations on farm fields. The FT department also provides food-related services, an annual farmers’ day, and a pet clinic, which the veterinary and animal science faculty pays for free. PMAS-AAUR has signed several MOUs and collaborated with national and international partners.
According to the HEC, the university ranks No. 2 in the Agriculture / Veterinary category and No. 7 overall in the ranking of universities in Pakistan. Arid Agriculture University offers bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degree programs. In other fields including Food Science and Technology, Computer Sciences, Management Sciences, Pure Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Social Sciences, and other Arts and Fine Arts programs.
