Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University Islamabad was established on March 21, 2013, by an Act of Parliament. The Vice-Chancellor was appointed by the Chancellor-President of Pakistan on January 7, 2014, on the recommendation of the Search Committee. Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad is a partial hospital of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University. PIMS has been the largest postgraduate medical center in the country since 1988.

The brief history of PIMS shows that the hospital was planned in the late 1960s. PIMS was formerly known as the Islamabad Hospital Complex (IHC), but was later renamed the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, which is now a 1,200-bed hospital. It was originally intended to be located on the premises of the National Institutes of Health but was later relocated to its current location in the federal capital’s convenience sector G-8/3, which is the capital’s headquarters.
